The Moroccan city of Marrakech will soon become the host to the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) scheduled to take place from 7-18 November 2016. The most important point on the agenda will be the first steps to be taken after the Paris Agreement enters into force on 4 November.
4 November will be a day of celebrations around the world. UNFCC encourages everyone to tell the world about this meaningful deal, thereby helping to raise awareness for the need for immediate action and what some ready-made solutions are. The Paris Agreement is an integral part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were also agreed in 2015. What started as two agendas have merged into one bold vision of a better world for every man, woman and child. All individuals, businesses and governments are encouraged to share a simple message – “We’re Taking Climate Action” – and use the following hashtags: #ParisAgreement, #GlobalGoals, #COP22 and #Climate Action.
Under the Paris Agreement, all nations have agreed to combat climate change and to unleash actions and investment towards a low carbon, resilient and sustainable future that will keep a global average temperature rise well below 2 degrees Celsius with the accepted international aim of working to limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius. At the Marrakech Climate Change Conference, the world’s leaders will continue their work on boosting the global response to the threat of environmental changes, with the major focus placed on enhancing ambition, promoting implementation and providing support.
